Leadership Reflections

~ 2-minute read.

Those who know me, know that I love what I do. They also know that I love what I do for a number of reasons, but predominantly because I have the opportunity to work, learn and laugh with others. I am in the invaluable position of being a part of the learning journeys of others and in return, they are a part of my journey as I always learn from them.

I have been working in partnership with Eisai ANZ for the past 3 years, developing and facilitating leadership programs.  As part of one program, I recently had the privilege to listen to, and celebrate, the stories of the participants. (Those who know me will know that this is one of the specific things I love about what I do.)

Below are some of the key reflections the participants shared that really resonated with me. These key reflections are too valuable to keep to myself and so, I share them with you. As you read these, I encourage you to think about what these mean to you as a leader in your workplace, your home, your community.

In no particular order …

“Leadership is a catalyst; it boosts collective strengths and helps individuals to thrive.” Anson Tian, Business Intelligence Analyst

With respect to being a role-model … “particularly when (you think) no-one is looking, everyone is looking.”Anon

“The first person you lead is yourself.” Jane Chapman, Office Manager

Neil Davies, Medical Advisor came up with the acronym, “DWYSYWD  – “that is, do what you say you will do.” And … it’s a palindrome!

“My leadership journey has come into its own the more I know myself.” Sam Peterson-Brown, National Sales Manager

With respect to authenticity, humility, courage … “We all start in the same place (as others; as executive leaders).” Lynda Johnston, Business Manager

And, Izabella Jelonek, Senior Brand Manager has identified the 5Cs that are most important to her as a leader. These are:

  1. Conditions
  2. Confidence
  3. Courage
  4. Coaching
  5. Celebration

In writing this blog, I am re-inspired by each of these people. Individually, they bring great strength to their roles – whether these roles are in the workplace or in their homes or communities. Collectively, they are a force to be reckoned with in the workplace!

Thank you for the chance to work and learn with each of you. You all leaned in and practised vulnerability every time an offer was made to practise. You all know my passion is to build courage and wow, you are all so courageous.

My heart is full,

Dina

P.S.  I just had to add this too. Jane also shared that as a 5-year old, she was presented with a glass that was half full or half empty (depending on how you look at it). She was asked “Is the glass half full or half empty.” Her reply, “Why can’t it be both?”  I will never look at a half full/empty glass the same way again.
